NOTE 1:  ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON (EXCEPT WHEN YOU ARE WORKING OFF LEASH WITH THE ELECTRONIC COLLAR) . NOTE 2:   DO NOT LEAVE METAL TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG. NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR METAL TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY. This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them . NOTE 4:  START EVERYTHING AT THE BEGINNING IN ENVIRONMENTS AND WITH EQUIPMENT THAT ARE EASY FOR YOU.   YOU WANT TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT FOXIE HAS LEARNED AND HOW TO HANDLE FOXIE IN LOW DISTRACTIONS FIRST, SO THAT YOU WILL BEGIN TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN MORE COMPLICATED OR HIGHER DISTRACTIONS LATER. NOTE 5:   THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PL...

Week 3 Schedule for House Training

Padme was having a growth spurt or change in her bathroom schedule on Week 3 that was more frequent.  So I am going to post the most recent bathroom schedule for Padme that worked for the final two days without accidents.  However, this is probably (and hopefully) going to change to be less.  On the final day that Padme was here, she did not go to the bathroom as frequently.  I did however keep to the more frequent schedule as she was having a problem holding it during Week 3 as she was in Week 2. In general, I would recommend waiting for a week of no accidents before changing the schedule (if you can).  Then I would begin taking out the times that she clearly did not need to go before changing the schedule. HOUSE TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR PADME Items in red are the things that changed in week 3 from week 2.  Also remember if in doubt and you can't be with her, put her in the crate. Note 1:  Also in general, if you get a poop and pee, you are probabl...

Week 3 Sit On The Dog

Image
Exercise: Sit on The Dog (do not confuse with the down exercise later on) Equipment needed: Metal Training Collar (for puppies a flat collar will due but be sure they can't slip their head out if it's too loose), 6' leather lead, chair for handler to sit on that they aren't too worried about (IE an antique chair would not be a good idea, especially for a dog that might try to chew something other than their toy while you aren't watching, but a good metal folding chair will do), silence which means no verbal commands, praise, or corrections. Also no conversations of any sort with your dog. Objective and Goals: This exercise starts the leadership portion of dog training in a very non confrontational way. You are defining the space and activity that the dog will inhabit while you are engaged in other activities. It starts the process of showing the dog how to quiet themselves down during certain times of day, and employ self control in distracting situations. ...

Week 3 Let's Go With Electronic Collar

Let's Go command.   So remember let's go means just move towards me.   You can tighten that up as much as you would like to be closer or farther away.   At the very beginning, I like them to come at least six feet from me. STEP 1:  Hold the long line appropriately through the handle STEP 2:  Begin walking your planned path until the dog is not following you anymore and has become distracted or not paying attention to what you are doing STEP 3:  At that point say "Let's Go" or "[Dog's Name] Let's Go" if you prefer. STEP 4A:  If the dog immediately comes towards you say "Good Boy" or "Good Let's Go".   STEP 4B:   If the dog doesn't (wait a couple of seconds to give them a chance, but not too long), use the top button (called the nick button) on the Dogtra collar and tap it repeatedly until the dog turns toward you, and then stop and encourage your dog forward STEP 4C:  If your dog gets confused or stuck wit...

Week 3 Sit With Electronic Collar

Sit Reps with the Electronic collar: ***Some or all of these can be done in the above exercise, when the dog is called back to you.   Simply place them in a sit after a "let's go" or "come".   They can also be done as a stand alone. Equipment needed:    Electronic collar, flat or training collar for leash attachment, and long line or 6' leash. STEP 1:  . Make sure you have turned the electronic collar on correctly (use the vibrate button, which on the dogtra is the last button away from the antenna side).   Also make sure the collar was put on tight enough. STEP 2:   Come to a stop from whatever you are doing (walking with the dog or following the dog around).   Be sure that you have access to stepping on the long line fairly close to your dog.   In fact in the beginning, you may want to be stepping on it already. STEP 3:   Issue the command "sit". STEP 3A:   Give them a second.   If they sit within that time, be sure t...

Week 2 Notes and Videos

Image
Housetraining Progress:   On week two, we started to get a nice baseline progress with Padme.   I am writing this in the middle of Week 3 though, where her body must be changing rapidly.   We are back on a more frequent housetraining schedule with her on Week 3 (so far) than we were on Week 2.  Unfortunately, there is little we can do with biology except ride it out. Advancing Previous Commands in Training: Sit with Correction if needed Inside  and  Outside: Inside sit repetitions  (with correction if needed) have gotten better and Padme can do 3 sessions of 4 in a row reps (without verbal or collar corrections) within 5 minutes inside.  I use these to warm up before the stays in this video. These outside in the yard sit reps  were hard because the leaves are falling and she is very into them.   I think we only got to 4 in a row sit reps (without needing verbal or collar corrections).  This is why different environme...

Week 2 House Training Progress

The Goal of Week 2:    We have increased the area she is free to roam in from just the mudroom and the dog room to both of these during the day using our scheduled outs. Also we are starting to space the schedule for the most efficient and effective times to go out to reduce the number of visits needed out (unless she gets sick, a growth spurt, and so on).  Additionally though, anytime she is barking at the sliding door (where she goes out) or goes downstairs more than an hour from her last bathroom, we are sure to let her her then.  We want her to understand the sliding door will open for her if she wants to go. Amount of accidents on Week 2:   (1)  9/12 7:45 am pooped and peed in the mudroom before she got out first thing in the morning, (2) 9/12 11:40 am peed while training in dog room (3)   9/17 around 11:40 am peed in dog room, but I did not see it happen.  I found it later near a chair.  So I am guessing the time it probably happ...

Week 2 Heeling on Leash and Release Word

PROPERTY OF MANNERLY MUTTS DOG TRAINING AND ROBIN RUBIN. WE ONLY ALLOW PAYING CLIENTS TO COPY THIS MATERIAL FOR THEIR USE ALONE. THIS MATERIAL MUST NOT BE DISTRIBUTED TO OTHER NON-CLIENT PARTIES OF MANNERLY MUTTS WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION. Heeling Begins Equipment needed: -6' Leather Lead -Training Collar ****NOTE, IF THE LONGE LINE HOMEWORK HAS NOT BEEN DONE, BEEN DONE INCORRECTLY, OR DONE INCONSISTENTLY DO NOT START HEELING. IT IS NOT FAIR TO THE DOG TO DO THIS, AND YOUR DOG WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE COOPERATIVE. Explanation and Goal of Exercise: To teach the dog to walk in an exact position for convenience of the handler. The Longe Line Work has started the commands of heel, come, and future off leash behavior. It is also a method to teach the dog never to pull on the leash. However, a dog is still able to get under foot at times or not be in such a convenient position when they are out and about with you. The goal of heeling is to have your dog in an exact position for ease of...

Week 2 Lured Heeling Step 2

STEP 1:    Lure your puppy or dog into a sit in heel position (puppy's shoulder should line up with your leg) on the side of you and facing in the same direction as you . STEP 2:  The hand holding the food reward will now be behind your back.  Remember it is your left hand holding the reward, your arm will be bent at the elbow and held up and behind your back. STEP 3:   Call your dog's name (remember the attention exercises) and when your dog looks at you, say "heel" as you step forward with your left leg. STEP 4:   When you start your heel, keep the food reward behind your back.   Start by attempting just five steps forward at first.  End this with your dog in a sit, and only if they are in a sit say "good boy or girl" and then pop food reward into their mouth. STEP 5:   Repeat.  Do 10 or 15 reps of this (not necessarily all at the same time.  if the puppy starts looking tired or flat at the end of a session then do a s...

Week 2 Stay Command (the very beginning)

PROPERTY OF MANNERLY MUTTS DOG TRAINING AND ROBIN RUBIN. WE ONLY ALLOW PAYING CLIENTS TO COPY THIS MATERIAL FOR THEIR USE ALONE. THIS MATERIAL MUST NOT BE DISTRIBUTED TO OTHER NON-CLIENT PARTIES OF MANNERLY MUTTS WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION. NOTE ON STAYS:   DO NOT RUSH THROUGH THIS EXERCISE.   IF YOU STOP AT ONE SECTION, BUT DO THE BEST WORK POSSIBLE THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT.   IF YOU CAME HERE MORE ADVANCED, BUT HAVE TROUBLE AT ONE LEVEL, THEN BACK DOWN TO THE PREVIOUS LEVEL, AND GET THAT DONE CORRECTLY BEFORE MOVING ON.   CORRECTLY GOING ON MEANS THAT THE DOG CAN PERFORM THE TASK WITHOUT TREAT OR CORRECTION FOUR OUT OF FIVE TIMES. Equipment Needed: 6' Leash (to begin with) Training Collar (martingale, metal chain collar, or prong collar) Explanation and Goal of Exercise:  The dog is required to perform the position of the command, and stay there until the release word is given.   The handler/owner will be increasing the ...

WEEK 1 NOTES AND VIDEO

Image
BLUE TEXT GOES TO LINKS. Housetraining has been taking up a good portion of our day.    This link goes to housetraining progress and work on Week 1 (phase 1).  Also this link goes to my housetraining tip article .  We are doing all of those things with Padme.   Loose Leash Walking:   I go on a neighborhood walk with Padme everyday for about 50 minutes.  On the walk, I use techniques to teach her that pulling is not desirable ( as on the attached article on loose leash ).  The walk on Week 1 is pretty sedate and only enough to be challenging to Padme, but not too challenging.  She gets distracted by cars, people, and dogs and can pull then.    Lured Heel Step 1:   Heel is a command that I use to get ready loose leash walking in the future.   Heel is a very exacting position command where your dog's shoulder should be at your leg as you walk forward, and that when you stop your dog also does an auto sit....

Week 1 Article on House Training Tips

Image
I get a fair number of calls a year for house training advice. I give out a lot of tips for free. Here are a list of tips that I give to owners that are seeking to housebreak their dog: Puppies NEED to go out more often than adults. Some can sleep through the night, and others can't. Some will need to go out about every two hours at first. When first bringing home a puppy, crate training and tethering when your attention can not be on them are great solutions. Let puppy or dog inside for loose play only after they have done number one and two as expected when first entering your home (and in their outside area obviously). Write down the times of any "accidents" and add those times to your schedule of when you let your dog or puppy out, until a reliable pattern develops. After an accident , immediately bring your puppy or dog outside. Keep separate bathroom times when your puppy or dog goes out vs play times. If the dog or puppy does not...

Week 1 Article on How to Train a Loose Leash

Image
I am sorry to inform you, I can't even summarize this in a short article with a quick tip.   That being said, if you are willing to do the work and practice it is not hard.  Loose leash walking is one of the most common things asked for by dog owners.   This is one of the fastest and easiest things to start in dog training, but you do actually have to train and teach your dog how to do it.   It is not going to get better if you try and wait it out (or you will only get there when your dog becomes geriatric).   When first training basic obedience, this is usually one of the first things we work on from day one.   Then it is practiced and maintained going forward as the rest of obedience is built upon loose leash walking. What exactly is loose leash walking?   When people talk about this, they are not usually talking about the more formal command "heel".   However, it means that the dog can walk on the leash without going to the end of it and...

Week 1 Lets Go

Equipment needed: Long Line, Training Collar, Food Reward (if that is what we are working with) NOTE THAT IN THE VIDEO PADME IS OFF LEASH ONLY BECAUSE SHE CAN HANDLE THAT INSIDE.  LATER ON, I WILL BE USING THE LONG LINE WHEN I AM OUTSIDE. Goal of Let's Go Command:   Let's go just means "come towards me".   It is a good beginning for both the loose leash walking (you could say let's go to bring her back from going to the end of the leash) and also a good beginning for the come command.   STEP 1:  You will be wanting to hold the end of the long leash for this one. STEP 2:     In the opposite hand, you will want to be holding the food reward. STEP 3:    Let your puppy get distracted.  If they go to the end of the line, just keep constant tension on until they turn towards you.   When they look at you OR they are not putting pressure on the line (in other words distracted but not going to the end of the line and they do...

Week 1 Phase One of House Training

The Goal of Week 1:    Limit mistakes that can happen in the house by starting to build a schedule of times you dog needs to go out, and them putting them on a phone alarm. Next:   Try to stick to alarms and feeding schedule for going out, unless she has just trained OR has played hard with a friend.  Then I bring her out a half hour into playing. **Also note, I bring her out alone with me to pee on leash so she does not forget or lie down.  This has seemed to work the best so far.  I don't trust her to remember after she lies down outside. Amount of accidents on Week 1:   Friday September 6th 11:25am caught her BEFORE she pooped in the middle of training and got downstairs, (1) Monday Sept 9th peed in dog training room in the middle of training at 11:41am, (2) Sunday Sept 810:35am peed and pooped in mudroom when I was a little late getting to her, (3) Sunday Sept 8th peed and pooped in mudroom at 12:45 pm,   Note:  She is more ...

Week 1 Sit With Correction

The goal for this week will be to do four in a row without needing the correction (which means it is very important to use the well timed correction when it is needed).   You will want to do this (with the heeling) for a half an hour a day. I AM NOT HEELING PADME AT THIS TIME.  I JUST WALK WITH HER. STEP 1 :  Heel with your dog, but be sure that your dog is in good heel position before preparing for the sit command.. STEP 2:    When ready say "sit" as you plant your left foot (while standing you will also close this up with your right foot, but you want to say sit while your dog is in good heel position to catch them as soon as possible---they will later learn to read this body language to create an auto sit).     Also keep your leash loose like a J next to the dog's neck when you say sit (no tension in the leash.   remember tension is only in times of correction) STEP 3: Give your dog one second, and have your l...

Week 1 Interim Correction for Sit (beginning of sit correction)

The goal for this week will be to do four in a row without needing the correction (which means it is very important to use the well timed correction when it is needed).   You will want to do this (with the heeling) for a half an hour a day. Also keep your leash loose like a J next to the dog's neck when you say sit (no tension in the leash.   remember tension is only in times of correction) STEP 3:  Give your dog one second, and have your leash prepared for the correction by having your hand down ...

Week 1 Molded Sits and Release Word

Equipment needed: 6' Leather Lead Training Collar Explanation and Goal of Exercise: This method of molding the dog into position, teaches the dog to allow our hands to mold and manipulate various parts of their body. The handler is also teaching themselves how to determine if a dog's muscles are relaxed with trust OR tense with distrust. Additionally, it is possible to detect a physical problem by touch as you mold your dog down. This also prepares your dog to sink into a sit readily when given the correction later on (if the correction is even necessary).  A sit is when your dog's upper torso is upright,  front leg(s) on the ground/floor, and bottom area is on the ground. Hand Drills (practice until your moves can move swiftly through the motions without the handler needing to think about it, before practicing with the dog): Practice these without the dog for a few minutes prior to starting. Your left hand will hold leash, transfer to your right hand (g...

Week 1 Lured Heeling Step 1

STEP 1:    Lure your puppy or dog into a sit in heel position (puppy's shoulder should line up with your leg) on the side of you and facing in the same direction as you .  When sitting in position, you can give your puppy the food reward. STEP 2:   Before heeling, be sure to have a food reward in your left hand. STEP 3:   Now you want to stand straight with the treat now held above your dog's nose.   Remember though, that you still are luring him into the heel position that you want.  Arm should be extended slightly in front of you (not off to the side) to lure your puppy's head forward straight and slightly beyond your leg. STEP 4:   Say "heel" and step forward with your left foot.  Your treat hand should be held slightly in front of your puppy's nose. STEP 5   Go a number of steps forward (be sure that you can retain your puppy's focus (If it is difficult you probably need to reduce the steps).   If your puppy walks or...
